12 Days Of #ChristmasRevealed DAY 3: Candy Cane

Why is a CANDY CANE a symbol of Christmas?

Hebrews 13:20-21 "Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."

What do these delicious red and white, hook shape candies have anything to do with Christmas? We see them probably as one of the most recognized symbols of Christmas, probably because everyone loves candy! They are so peppermint sweet and last a good while. I sometimes even give them to my toddler, since he's at that age of putting everything in his mouth, this is something he can sit and enjoy.

Candy canes carry a legend, legend meaning its not factual, but nevertheless still good to use in teaching children, just like a parable about a candy maker who wanted to share his Christian faith with children in India and so he made the candy cane. I won't get into that legend, but for a good parable read you can Google "Legend of Candy Cane".

Instead I think the following Candy Cane poem best describes how a Candy Cane can point us to Jesus during Christmas:

Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me
White is for my Savior
Who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus My Lord, that's for sure!
Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!

So this Christmas, whether you get a Candy Cane on a Christmas card, hanging from the Christmas tree, or in a Christmas stocking, let it be a reminder of the greatness of why Jesus came!

Have yourself an awesome Christmas with our great Shepherd Jesus and allow your faith to be strong and sweet just like a Candy Cane!
